The Mammoth Saloon was one of three saloons that were in business during the Arizona gold rush of 1893 here at Goldfield. The first discovery of high grade gold ore was made in 1892 by Orlando Merrill while mining on another gold claim nearby with two other partners. They sold their discovery to Haff & Sullivan Mining company out of Colorado and soon news spread of this rich discovery. A town was established and named Goldfield. Some estimates of population were two to five thousand people who lived here. There were 50 paying claims in this area. The biggest and richest ore body was taken out of the Mammoth Mine. Remnants of these old mines can still be seen today. More than 3 millions dollars of gold was taken from Gold Field at the price of $20.67 per oz.
